Why do we do these things?
The primary reason I make myself available as a fencing coach is to help the sport grow in popularity. With more coaching resource available more people will participate. More participants will lead to more competitors at more competitions. Greater competition leads to higher standards of fencer. More and better fencers will lead to better officiating and better coaches. This virtuous circle can only be helped by the increased publicity from the 2012 London Olympic Games.
My second reason is to help the person, who doesn’t aspire to become an Olympic champion have the opportunity to exercise, without having to resort to what I refer to as the B sports and the R sports. What are those you might ask? B sports are Ball sports, where one person has the ball, one person is trying to get the ball/hit the ball and the rest of the teams are not doing very much at all for most of the time. R sports are the repetitive sports where the same limited action or set of actions is/are repeated over and over again. I’m sure you figure out which sports these are without my help. Personally I like to be active all the time I’m in a session and believe variety is the spice of life.
